Belfast International Airport VCCS
Systems Interface was awarded the contract for the turn-key delivery of a complete new Voice Communications and Control System (VCCS) for Belfast International Airport’s control tower, where NATS provide the ANSP function. The new equipment replaced the TDCE and RDCE voice system, which was the last of type still in use in the UK. The project scope included VCCS complete with VHF and UHF radios, and an Emergency voice communications system.

The project was undertaken within the challenging environment of the Belfast Airport Control Tower Building, formally RAF Aldegrove. Belfast International is a 24/7 operation and the new systems were successfully brought into service with zero downtime during the transition. Systems Interface was responsible for all aspects of the upgrade from initial design and procurement through to civil works, installation and commissioning.
Through careful design and planning the new equipment was installed in parallel with legacy systems enabling a seamless transition, despite the challenges presented by the limited available space and cable routes, and the requirement to install operator systems within the legacy console furniture.
The new Communication Systems became operational in March 2013
