Systems Interface to deliver Advanced Meteorological System for Uganda’s Kabalega International Airport

Systems Interface Ltd has been selected to design, integrate and deliver a fully automated weather observation system (AWOS) for the new Kabalega International Airport in Hoima, Uganda. Acting as prime contractor, the company will be responsible for managing the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the airport’s AWOS, providing critical real-time weather data to support safe aircraft operations as Kabalega develops into a strategic logistics hub for western Uganda’s growing energy, agriculture and tourism sectors.

The AWOS installation will provide a comprehensive suite of meteorological sensors across the airfield, measuring key parameters including wind, pressure, temperature, visibility, cloud height and lightning activity. The system will collect and process this data in real time, delivering automated weather reports and continuous monitoring to air traffic control and other airport stakeholders. The solution is based on proven aviation meteorological technology, CampbellAeroTM, from System Interface’s partner, Campbell Scientific, a globally recognised specialist in airport weather observation systems and leading measurement systems provider.

David Chandler, Sales and Business Development Director at Systems Interface, said:

“Delivering an integrated meteorological system in a remote location like Hoima requires careful engineering and close collaboration across multiple disciplines. Our role as principal contractor is to bring together the sensor technologies, communications infrastructure and operational software into a single robust system that meets international aviation standards.”

A key element of the programme is knowledge transfer and long-term operational support. Systems Interface and Campbell Scientific are delivering factory training, on-site training and a three-year support programme to ensure local engineering teams from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority can maintain and operate the system effectively for many years to come.

Once complete, the AWOS installation will provide automated METAR reporting, weather monitoring and operational displays for air traffic controllers and meteorological personnel, significantly enhancing situational awareness and operational safety at Kabalega International Airport.

The AWOS project builds on Systems Interface’s earlier delivery of Kabalega International Airport’s core air navigation infrastructure, including the Instrument Landing System (ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) and Doppler VHF Omnidirectional Range (DVOR). That earlier phase was delivered under a UK Export Finance (UKEF)-backed programme and established the foundation for the airport’s safe and efficient operation as it develops into a major regional gateway.

Understanding AWOS
Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) is an airport weather system with complete configuration capabilities that offers continuous, real-time data and reports on airport weather conditions at the airport. These systems generally report at hourly intervals but also report special observations if weather conditions change rapidly and cross aviation operation thresholds. AWOS systems are generally managed by Airports or Air Navigation Service Providers.

About Kabalega International Airport
Kabalega International Airport, located near Hoima in western Uganda, is a major new airport being developed to support the region’s growing economic importance. Situated close to Uganda’s oil and gas developments around Lake Albert, the airport is intended to serve as a strategic gateway for industrial logistics, domestic and international travel, and the wider development of the energy, agriculture and tourism sectors. Once fully operational, it will play a key role in improving connectivity and supporting long-term economic growth across western Uganda.
